Williams Stadium has undergone significant renovations over the past few seasons of FBS football, and more changes were announced Jan. 20.
Seats are the focus of the upgrade this time as the new plans aim to improve every non-student seat during this round of renovations.
All seats on the west side of the stadium will become chairbacks while all seats in the upper deck on the east side will become benchbacks.
Another massive change is by the south end zone. Twenty-three cabanas are being added above a newly-graded hill. The hill previously was too steep to offer seating, but the new design will allow space for students and the public.
Construction is slated to start by the end of January and finish just before the Flames’ season this fall.
Currently, the construction is scheduled to go on through commencement, but Athletic Director Ian McCaw commented that commencement should still continue as originally planned.
“They’ll work through commencement, but obviously we’ll make adjustments to ensure that commencement goes off seamlessly,” he said.
McCaw mentioned that the stadium is gradually expanding with the football program.
“We do have the ability to increase capacity, and we want to grow with the program,” McCaw said. “It doesn’t help to expand to 40,000 seats if we’re drawing 20,000 people. We’re going to be really judicious as we look to increase capacity.”
